A Working Memorial Day
I don't understand it, but my employer does not recognize Memorial Day as a paid holiday.
When I first moved South I heard it called "A Yankee Holiday," yes I did.
So though we were thin and there was not a whole lot of interaction with anyone today, E. was there to serve.
With a nice cup of Joe beside him.
All the best. Enjoy the day and give some thought about the price of freedom today.

Survivors!
To Those of Us Born
1930 - 1979
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered
with bright colored lead-base paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes,
we had baseball caps
not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.
Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight.. WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on..
No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride them down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones,
no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping pong paddles, or just
a bare hand and no one would call child services to report
abuse.
We ate worms and mud pies
made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

Jesuitical
“The human person is created to praise, reverence and serve God Our Lord, and by so doing to save his or her soul. The other things on the face of the earth are created for human beings in order to help them pursue the end for which they are created. It follows from this that one must use other created things in so far as they help towards one’s end, and free oneself from them in so far as they are obstacles to one’s end. To do this we need to make ourselves indifferent to all created things, provided the matter is subject to our free choice and there is no prohibition. Thus as far as we are concerned, we should not want health more than illness, wealth more than poverty, fame more than disgrace, a long life more than a short one, and similarly for all the rest, but we should desire and choose only what helps us more towards the end for which we are created.”

The Facebook Economy...
is pretty flimsy. But we can get all excited about it, that's for sure.
What, precisely, is the significant difference between an economy built on Facebook and a tribe of naked pagans exchanging leaves with one another? At least in the case of the latter, someone is picking up the leaves off the ground. The idea that the more efficient exchange of information would make us more productive refuted itself with the release of Windows 3.0 and the inclusion of Solitaire and today is no more credible than the now-laughable idea that financial innovations and complex financial instruments would benefit the economy as a whole.
I don’t begrudge the Facebook investors their billions nor do I know where this is all leading. And yet, I can’t escape the thought that if Facebook is the crown jewel in our economic empire, the emperor is not wearing any clothes.

E.'s not going to pile on FB. I'm on it, but post very sparingly. It is fun to hear about what's going on in "friends'" lives.
I think FB, if they are half as smart as I think they are, will find ways to offer "products" and "services" that their users would be willing to volunteer to pay a little bit for. They have a very captive user base and they will attempt to make money from us. I don't want to be forced to buy anything though or pay for anything that has been free thus far. That will finish me with them.

A great from a great.
MP3 File
"That Girl" is a 1981 soul single by American Motown singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder. The song was on the Original Musiquarium I, as one of four newer songs from the collection. The song spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart and reached number four on the Hot 100.[1]
Back To The Way...
the world sometimes works, sadly:
In the new documentary, "Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir", presented out of competition at Cannes, he again says he regrets having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 after plying her with drugs and champagne.

How regretful indeed.

Lee Fields "Faithful Man"
Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to a man I just met. Mr Lee Fields, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Lee Fields.
Give it up.
A Cool Interview...
With the Beach Boys in April 2012 - New Orleans
When asked for his high school yearbook what he thought he’d be doing in five years, Jeffrey Foskett wrote: “I’ll either be playing in the Beach Boys or the Beatles.”
So on his 20th birthday, two years after his high school graduation, the young musician walked up to the front door of Brian Wilson’s house — that Brian Wilson, the one of Beach Boys fame — knocked on the door and asked to see Brian.
...
“It’s been an interesting ride,” said Foskett. “People say they’re big Beach Boys fans and I’m sure they are. But I was a huge, huge, huge Beach Boys fan.”
Ya think?
With Jeffrey Foskett of the Beach Boys.
Bonus:
Another really good interview with Foskett. For those that share a certain obsession.
