Confessions of a Car Salesman

What really goes on in the back rooms of car dealerships across America? What does the car salesman do when he leaves you sitting in a sales office and goes to talk with his boss? What are the tricks salespeople use to increase their profit and how can consumers protect themselves from overpaying? Edmonds.com has an interesting 9-part series about how things are done in the industry.

An Anatomically Correct Skeleton of Charlie Brown

You can find so many strange things on the WWW! More here.

Old Glory

The American flag stands for your right to burn it.

I like that. You can quote me. When someone that honors the flag sees someone desecrating it, they have the right to go and put a stop to it. Kick their ass if you must. But should someone be imprisoned for unpopular political speech? Don't doubt for a second that burning a flag is speech. It is symbolizing that the burner is not happy with what his/her country is doing. 95% of Americans probably view flag-burning as a sad and sorry practice. Some want to say, "God damn them, this is America, love it or leave it." If the flag-burners are anarchists, we will eventually get something on them to put them away for. Don't jail people for political speech. That's what they did in Russia. That's what they do in North Korea, China, and other countries led by tin-pot dictators.

Do we want our right to complain about our government supressed? That's all they are doing. Throw people in jail for complaining about our government? That's not American. People shouldn't hide behind the flag while they reduce Americans' right to protest against our government.

"I disagree with what you have to say but will fight to the death to protect your right to say it."

It turns out that nobody is really sure who said that originally, but you can read all about that issue here.

By the way, did anyone notice that it is an election year? Repubs need something the get their base all fired up. They drag out the flag issue every time they really need a boost.

Update: Flag burning is up 33% this year. Oh my God! It jumped from 3 to 4.

"The Citizens Flag Alliance, a group pushing for the Senate this week to pass a flag-burning amendment to the Constitution, just reported an alarming, 33 percent increase in the number of flag-desecration incidents this year.

The number has increased to four, from three." Find the source of this troubling trend here.

"Chainsaw" Al Dunlop Talks Tough

DUNLAP: "Well, I think that, when you looked at when I came to Sunbeam, the stock went up fifty-nine percent the first day, and that’s, we’re led to believe, the highest, biggest increase in the stock price of a New York Stock Exchange traded company in the history of the New York Stock Exchange. But I think, why is that happening? That’s happening because people know what I’m gonna do. They know I’m gonna put together the best management team. They know I’m gonna dramatically cut the cost. They know I’m gonna focus on the core business. And they know I’m gonna come up with a winning strategy, and that’s really what they’re betting on. And they know I’ll implement it." (I counted 9 "I"s in this very short statement!)

That from an interview with Hedrick Smith from Surviving the Bottom Line on PBS broadcast in 1998. Dunlop was at the top of his game it would appear.

And then Sunbeam went bankrupt a few short years later. How about this shareholder question and answer found here?:

Q:
"I was a Sunbeam Corporation shareholder before the completion of the bankruptcy (i.e., prior to December 2002), what is my status now? Will my shares be purchased by Jarden?"

A:
"Sunbeam Corporation (now named American Household, Inc.) (“Sunbeam”) filed for protection under chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in February 2001. Sunbeam’s chapter 11 plan of reorganization provided that all shares of common stock of Sunbeam would be cancelled without any payment. Sunbeam’s chapter 11 plan of reorganization became effective on December 18, 2002. As a result, at that time, the shares of Sunbeam common stock were cancelled in accordance with the plan. Therefore, since your shares have been cancelled, no purchase or payment will be made in respect of such cancelled shares."

Can't find much about Al Dunlop these days. Sadly, he's living on his $millions$ in gains somewhere.

Slow Turning

"Time is short and here’s the damn thing about it
You’re gonna die, gonna die for sure
And you can learn to live with love or without it
But there ain’t no cure

There’s just a...

Slow turnin'
From the inside out
A slow turnin'
But you come about
Slow learnin'
But you learn to sway
A slow turnin' baby

Not fade away
Not fade away
Not fade away
Not fade away"

They Are Out There

Closer than I want to believe, I fear. Is Your Boss a Psychopath? Great Fast Company article from last year. Looks at the likes of Andrew Fastow of Enron and "Chainsaw" Al Dunlap from Sunbeam.

The article on Fastow:

"In the most recent wave of scandals, Enron's Fastow displayed many of the corporate psychopath's traits. He pressured his bosses for a promotion to CFO even though he had a shaky grasp of the position's basic responsibilities, such as accounting and treasury operations. Suffering delusions of grandeur after just a little time on the job, Fastow ordered Enron's PR people to lobby CFO magazine to make him its CFO of the Year. But Fastow's master manipulation was a scheme to loot Enron. He set up separate partnerships, secretly run by himself, to engage in deals with Enron. The deals quickly made tens of millions of dollars for Fastow -- and prettified Enron's financials in the short run by taking unwanted assets off its books. But they left Enron with time bombs that would ultimately cause the company's total implosion -- and lose shareholders billions. When Enron's scandals were exposed, Fastow pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to pay back nearly $24 million and serve 10 years in prison. "

Fastow's WIFE went to prison (even before he did!) , most likely as a result of his manipulation.

And then there is Dunlap:

"Chainsaw" Al Dunlap might score impressively on the corporate Psychopathy Checklist too. What do you say about a guy who didn't attend his own parents' funerals? He allegedly threatened his first wife with guns and knives. She charged that he left her with no food and no access to their money while he was away for days. His divorce was granted on grounds of "extreme cruelty." That's the characteristic that endeared him to Wall Street, which applauded when he fired 11,000 workers at Scott Paper, then another 6,000 (half the labor force) at Sunbeam. Chainsaw hurled a chair at his human-resources chief, the very man who approved the handgun and bulletproof vest on his expense report. Dunlap needed the protection because so many people despised him. His plant closings kept up his reputation for ruthlessness but made no sense economically, and Sunbeam's financial gains were really the result of Dunlap's alleged book cooking. When he was finally exposed and booted, Dunlap had the nerve to demand severance pay and insist that the board reprice his stock options. Talk about failure to accept responsibility for one's own actions."

Read how the crazy asshole self-destructed here.

The People Get The Government They Deserve

But what do "we the people" have to do with insane decisions like this? War on terror indeed. We will lose without even trying. Read it and weep. Another House of Bush deal with the House of Saud. Should ordinary people worry about this? Ya think?!!!!!!

Do-Gooder, Sarah McLachlan

Nice concept. Focuses on our frivolity and the cost of our entertainment.

McLachlan's video of 'World on Fire' highlights the contrast between the haves and haves nothing.

Rather than use the $150,000 production fund to film an elaborate video for 'World on Fire,' Sarah McLachlan and director Sophie Muller opted instead to donate the money to a list of 11 charities. The total cost of the video was nothing more than the cost of a CD. McLachlan's good will caught the eye of fellow benefactor Oprah Winfrey, who invited the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter to perform the song on her show. "I love this," Winfrey said. "It's about getting every one of us to look inside of ourselves to see, 'What can I do?'"

Then there is the questions of preferences. SM in leather or barefoot in bluejeans? Both have their place I would say.

Ahhhhhhh Summertime!

Waking Up

Spirituality Means Waking Up. by Anthony de Mello

Most people, even though they don't know it, are asleep. They're born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence. You know, all mystics -Catholic, Christian, non-Christian, no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion -- are unanimous on one thing: that all is well, all is well. Though everything is a mess, all is well. Strange paradox, to be sure. But, tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep. They are having a nightmare.Last year on Spanish television I heard a story about this gentleman who knocks on his son's door. "Jaime," he says, "wake up!" Jaime answers, "I don't want to get up, Papa." The father shouts, "Get up, you have to go to school." Jaime says, "I don't want to go to school." "Why not?" asks the father. "Three reasons," says Jaime. "First, because it's so dull; second, the kids tease me; and third, I hate school." And the father says, "Well, I am going to give you three reasons why you must go to school. First, because it is your duty; second, because you are forty-five years old, and third, because you are the headmaster." Wake up, wake up! You've grown up. You're too big to be asleep. Wake up! Stop playing with your toys. Most people tell you they want to get out of kindergarten, but don't believe them. Don't believe them! All they want you to do is to mend their broken toys. "Give me back my wife. Give me back my job. Give me back my money. Give me back my reputation, my success." This is what they want; they want their toys replaced. That's all. Even the best psychologist will tell you that, that people don't really want to be cured. What they want is relief; a cure is painful.Waking up is unpleasant, you know. You are nice and comfortable in bed. It's irritating to be woken up. That's the reason the wise guru will not attempt to wake people up. I hope I'm going to be wise here and make no attempt whatsoever to wake you up if you are asleep. It is really none of my business, even though I say to you at times, "Wake up!" My business is to do my thing, to dance my dance. If you profit from it, fine; if you don't, too bad! As the Arabs say, "The nature of rain is the same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens."

Insights from Thomas Sowell

Of course, I don't agree with everything that Sowell opines about, but he sure has a way of putting things:

"When you have 90 percent of what you want, think twice before insisting on the other 10 percent. "

""We are a nation of immigrants," we are constantly reminded. We are also a nation of people with ten fingers and ten toes. Does that mean that anyone who has ten fingers and ten toes should be welcomed and given American citizenship? "

"If you read all the fine print in all the documents you have to sign, you would have no time left to live a life. "

Find more from Sowell's archives here. Every now and then he shares his "Random Thoughts." I enjoy them most.

How The Modern Minutemen Were Born

Check this link out. It's about Chris Simcox, the founder of those folks down at our border who are probably doing more for our security there than our government under George W. Bush. Home Depot vs. the Dow and the S&P

Thanks lots Bob, you leader you.

Home Depot's Poor Leadership

This guy CEO Bob Nardelli was featured in Business Week touting how he wanted to run Home Depot like the military. He learned his trade from the infamous Jack Welch while at GE. At GE he was known as "Little Jack." I've got to dump this stock. It has been terrible. Check out what happened at HD's annual meeting here. Bobby Boy didn't want to listen to anyone. Sounds like some bad generals from history doesn't it?

Here's what the Business Week article said this March:

"Skip the touchy-feely stuff. The big-box store is thriving under CEO Bob Nardelli's military-style rule."

Bullshit. It was hardly thriving. Another business magazine celebrity CEO puff piece about something novel - military-style leadership in a large company. Great.

Now here is what they are saying.

“To the ire of many investors, however, Home Depot’s total return to shareholders, a key benchmark of corporate performance, is down 13%, according to Institutional Shareholders Services (ISS). Still, Home Depot (HD) has rewarded Nardelli, 58, handsomely in that period, with some $200 million in salary, bonus, stock, stock options, and other perks. In 2005, Nardelli took home a hefty $38.1 million in total compensation.”

From Business Week Online, May 23, 2006.

And their service sucks compared to Lowes also. See here.

I've compared HD's stock performance with the Dow and S&P 500 above.

I suspect Bobby Boy will be gone soon. Within a year. Wanna bet?

One more thing. Bob Boy never served in the military a day in his life. At least it is not mentioned in his bio here.

Happy...

Happy Tiananmen Square Massacre Day - June 4, 1989
Chinese teens have no idea what their government did to its people that day. They certainly don't read about it in modern Chinese History class.

"Commies aren't cool. You silly American kids with your Che Guevara t-shirts need to watch this video every day. "

From an eye witness account:

"So then, that Saturday evening, one student came back from the west of the city and said that soldiers had moved in with teargas. And, about a day before, an army vehicle had crashed into and killed three students. So the temperature was quite high. One student started throwing stones at the soldiers. And that was the first time I saw the barbarism that I was to see again several hours later.

"Some of the soldiers in a posse ran out into the crowd and captured the student. They took him and placed him in the middle of the 3,000 troops. They stripped him naked. It was still very hot then, 32 degrees C. They got a wooden bat and they smashed his head. He was still standing up. They made sure he stood up. They split his skull open. He just stood there and he bled to death. About two hours later he dropped dead. It was a horrific sight. He was just forced to stand there naked with blood streaming from his headwound until he died."

My Sentiments Exactly

"I’m sitting here in my Summerville home drinking a cold beer, about to watch “The Sopranos” on a warm and safe Sunday night, no Taliban for many miles. All I can do is pay homage to guys you who are over there protecting us from radical Islam. You see, I’m one of the people back here who ‘gets it’: our enemy wants to kill all of us who don’t pray to Allah five times a day, that this is a war, just a different kind of one. Our enemy wants the whole world to live in the 12th century, ruled by fear and despots, no cable TV, no Taco Bell. Our enemy this time has no ball-bearing plants in the Ruhr to bomb, has no nation/state at all, and no navy or air force. He doesn’t care if he gets blown up in the attempt to kill you, or me, or The Dixie Chicks. But he wants you just as dead as any enemy America has ever had."
