Half-Man, Half-Machine: The Mind of the Future

Reality Carnival pointed me to a glimpse of the future from a Business Week article published 8 years ago. Raymond C. Kurzweil is a scary guy. "Human" machine brains are something that he thinks are inevitable, just another leap in human evolution. He may be right that this sort of thing is on the horizon. Non-technological (biological) evolution is one thing. But Kurzweil puts his evolutionary scenario on the same level, but it is fundamentally different.

But as bad as humanity can be, I don't think decisions to enhance/change the human race via internal machines should be done without serious serious discussion and debate. Who decides what? What right do "they" have to fundamentally change humanity. Where goes our freedom, self-determination? Doctrinaire determinists don't believe in that kind of stuff so it's easy for them to say "bring it on."

Can't we just leave bad enough alone?

Thugo's Mental Problems

This article questions the sanity of my Favorite Dictator in the Western Hemisphere, Thugo Chavez.
"Insecurity, "malignant narcissism" and the need for adulation are driving Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's confrontation with the United States, according to a new psychological profile."
Everyone knows that bullies are not getting much love or understanding from mom and dad.

The Illegal Alien / U.S. Unemployment Connection

MGF sent this letter to the editor of our local paper today and I wanted to share. I haven't heard any pundit make this connection before. Legislate that our able-bodied American unemployed men and women work for jobs they can do, i.e. low/no skilled labor and maybe illegal aliens will just go home because there is no work for them.

Well, let's just see now…..

We're being told that there are many, many illegal aliens here in our U.S.A. I do think the correct term is 'illegal aliens', because a) they are here illegally; and, b) they are aliens.
We should take care to avoid the term 'immigrant', because one can only qualify as a one-way
immigrant if one comes here legally and has sworn allegiance to her/his new country.

As is so often said, we are a nation of immigrants. We are not, however, a nation of aliens.
An alien, after all, is from someplace else. Nor can I stomach using Harry Reid's term ("Illegal Americans") or Diane Feinstein's term ("Good Citizens Without Citizenship"). The blatant pandering exposed in such terms is beyond shame - their cynical purpose being to not alienate the aliens. I mean, after all, if the political class can pull this off, those people might vote, for goodness sake ! To the political class, that's way more important than principle.
The estimated number of illegal aliens one hears most frequently is about 12 million - a number greater than the populations of 44 of our 50 States.

12 million is awfully close to the number of Americans now unemployed. According to the US Department of Labor, Unemployment now stands at 4.5%; and approximately 66% of the population "participates" in the Labor Force - the other 34% are too young, too old, in the military, in prison, or simply not participating. Let's connect a couple of dots that I, for one, have heard not a single politician connect… At the same time we are being told many illegal aliens are here doing work "no one wants to do", we have some millions of American citizens collecting welfare, but not doing work. Now, millions of our welfare recipients are able-bodied, but unwilling to do the only kinds of work for which they are qualified. Our welfare system helps enable such decisions. If our own citizens were to take on many of these jobs they "don't want to do", a substantial portion of the work now being done by illegal aliens would dry-up, wouldn't it ?

Of course, there is a very large fly in this ointment - that is, does the political class have the courage to require all employers to pay at least minimum wage for all of our lawn maintenance and lettuce-picking ? And, to punish them severely if they do not ? Before our political class tries yet again to foist upon us their bogus insistence that any "immigration reform" must be "comprehensive", I think we, the people, should demand that they link the reality of illegal aliens doing "the work no one wants to do" with the reality of millions of our own citizens who
"won't do the work". Seems to me we have two broken systems: Immigration and Welfare and our political class isn't fixing either one.

"Hip Hop Culture."

I was cheered when I heard this on a African American focused NPR radio show, News and Notes, last evening. An African American woman, a college president, made the observation.

Go Navy

USS New York (LPD-21)
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorist s. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

I think that this is the best thing I've ever read about the Christian Fundamentalist / Hard Core Atheist controversy. If you have an interest in the debate, this can be very helpful. I've made Wong one of my favorites on the right as a result.

Forgot to acknowledge yesterday with all the other important stuff I needed to post about like facilitator porn. Hope you find time to relax in the way that brings relaxation to you this summer.

The Niqab

First off, this is sexy to me. Leaves a little something to the imagination.

But Drudge pointed me to an article about how the wearing of the niqab in London is controversial.

Some "commentators" are up in arms and say it should be banned.

I say live and let live.

It troubles me, if true, that some women began wearing it after 9/11 to show solidarity with the bad guys. They are probably a tiny tiny nutty minority.

When "secular" societies start banning religious anything, people better begin to worry about what of their faiths may be next to be banned: a crucifix or a nun's habit for a Catholic, a yarmulkas for a Jew, a turban for a Sikh, roman collars for priests, golden robes for Buddhists, Bic lighters for Zoroastrians...

Stretch Goals

I've sought to get my military medical records for during the time I spent in the Navy. I used a very user-friendly web request yesterday and faxed a true signature verification this morning. They were very quick to respond once they received my fax, but that's only the good news. This is the bad news that they shared in an email today(verbatim):

"Thank you for submitting a request to the National Personnel Records Center.

"We have received your signature authorization for request number: (ommited for my privacy).

"The majority of these types of requests are serviced in 25 weeks or less. We regret the lengthy response time required to service your request. We service approximately 20,000 requests each week and are working earnestly and successfully at reducing our response time. Our goal is to reduce our response time on these types of requests to ten days or less.

"Thank you."

Quite a strech goal they have set for themselves, eh? And what if I was bleeding?

Putting Fun Back In DysFUNctional

We have regular "staff meetings" where the boss shares information down to us. That's good as far as it goes. There is no real authentic discussion. It's neither solicited nor appreciated. No problem solving without posing. None. Towards the end we are invited to share any information we might like. It's the end, for god's sake, so mostly we don't.

But today I had a funny idea to share something and I spoke up at our meeting and said this, just for the fun of it:

"I think having all this information at the desktop is great!"

I codified this statement immediately after delivered in the category of: "stupid obvious executive statements." (I actually am considered an executive in our pecking order, but of a clearly lower order if you catch my drift.)

Today at lunch I whittled down my description of what I said today to this: "A non-contributing contribution."

They are legion in the corporate world.
I'm sure that Dad would chastise me for behaving this way at our meetings since I don't follow his etiquette very well. Oh well.

Perfect Gifts For The Metrosexual Father

KENMEN SKIN CARE FITNESS is as Essential to Men’s skin care as "GROOMING is to the ART OF SELF-RESPECT".

O gawd!

A little love would go a long way right now. We should stop putting newcomers in constant jeopardy by blithely importing ever-newer immigrants who'll work for ever lower wages. The ones here will never get a sure foot on the next rung that way.

We should close the border, pause, absorb what we have, and set ourselves to "patriating" the newcomers who are here. The young of AmeriCorps might help teach them English. Those reaching retirement age, who happen to be the last people in America who were taught and know American history, could help them learn the story of our country. We could, as a nation, set our minds to this.

We shouldn't be disheartened. So much good could be done once a Great Pause begins, once the alarm is abated.

What will we do about the 12 million here? Nothing radical. We're not really a radical people, Americans.

Having no borders--that's radical.

Saying, to the American people, in essence, Back my big bill or I will not close the borders, is radical.

Insisting on "all or nothing at all" is radical.

Leaving your country wide open in the age of terror is radical.

But America isn't radical. If its leaders only knew! Our leaders are in need not only of wisdom but of faith. And, as always, love, as opposed to mere sentiment, and vanity, and pride.

Trent Lott of Mississippi

Senator "Sam Donaldson Hair" Lott opines:

Comments by Republican senators on Thursday suggested that they were feeling the heat from conservative critics of the bill, who object to provisions offering legal status. The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.” Entire article here.

Does he realize how relatively FEW people listen to rightward talk radio? Or talk radio in general? Trouble is those few that do listen most likely vote and have been making their congresspeople and senators lives' miserable because they simply are unwilling to let this amnesty bill be passed and they are phoning and emailing and writing, etc. telling them to get the border secure first before anything else.

Wonder how Repub Sen. Lott is going to deal with that pesky problem called free speech?

Just do it.

A Little Goddess (For Real!)

Nine-year-old Sajani Shakya is venerated as a deity in the Katmandu valley of Nepal.

"She's a very remarkable kid. She's cheeky, funny, mischievous; she is able to relate to her work — she takes it very seriously and knows what to do. Whether that means she's divine, I think that depends on your religious persuasion."

The Kumaris are Buddhist girls believed to be inhabited by a Hindu goddess, so they're seen as symbols of religious tolerance. For centuries, the goddesses were used by kings to legitimize their rule.

A documentary was made about her. Unfortunately she loses her goddess status when she reaches menses.

Nativist Schmativist

Update: A cogent article on illegal aliens by Victor Davis Hanson. Yes, he calls them that.

"Concern over this inevitable slowdown in integration and assimilation is neither racist nor nativist. It grows out of real worry that when millions of impoverished arrive in mass without legality, education and the ability to speak English, costly social problems follow that will not be offset by the transitory economic benefits cheap wages may provide."

Plain Talk About Illegal Immigration Reduction

About half of all the illegal immigrants in the U.S. enter through Arizona.

"No legislation is better than bad legislation...Sign an executive order to assign 20,000 National Guard troops to that border. Build those fences as quickly as possible. And the president can take care of that first piece, border security."

Say What You Want About Newtie

He is an idea guy.

"In a glimpse of what his candidacy might look like, he said he would shut down public schools that aren't performing and offer a $20 billion reward for the first private company that successfully completes a Mars mission.

"Somebody would be there and back about 40 percent of the way into the NASA process," he said."

I like both of these ideas. I don't like Newt though.

C- - - Trashes Jordin Sparks

"Roth tells’s The Scoop that she’s only looking out for Sparks’ long term health when she refers to the 17-year-old as “obese.”

"When I look at Jordin I see diabetes, I see heart disease, I see high cholesterol. That's what's so sad about this - she is not the vision of health - she is the vision of unhealth,” Roth said.

Sparks, whose father is former NFL star Phillipi Sparks, has said publicly that she embraces her “extra curves” and is against society’s obsession with being thin. Roth, however, believes those kinds of attitudes toward excess weight can lead to catastrophic health problems down the line.

“Her extra weight is a reflection of today's society and a culture where many of our children have compromised health due to unhealthful food choices and inactivity,” said Roth. “We have to stop with the 'baby fat,' 'curvy,' 'goddess' euphemisms and own this child’s health crisis."

Jordin fans are threatening this lady, but I just want her to go to hell. Article here.

Welcome to Hollywood Jordin. She's not even the American Idol for but a week or so and she is viciously analysed by a so-called obesity expert. What is this woman's qualifications? Whatever they are she is a c--- and she and her organization can get f---ed. I hope Jordin has very good people around her. She's gonna need them.
The sailor cursing was completely justified in this case. And it comes with bona fides. I served proudly in the 80's.
Update: More nuanced feedback for Ms. Roth here. This from a fitness site. One person calls her a nut-case. NATIONAL ACTIONAGAINST OBESITY Website. It appears that Roth is its founder (and Chief Crusader Rabbit) and her mission is to save us all from ourselves.
