Vancouver Allows Smoking, But Only for Muslims

"This is just pathetic." Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.

There is not a better way to describe these kinds of decisions. Every cigarette and cigar smoker should simply ignore the smoking ban, period. Smoky bars are an infidel tradition and "provide an important cultural space" for us.

United States - Pure Good or Pure Evil?

There have been lines being drawn around this question throughout our history, both within it and outside of it, of course.
Devil or Angel?

How about "Angvil"
Glenn Greenwald is cogent as usual about this topic. From his blog today:

"There really is this child-like need in American mainstream political discourse constantly to believe that we are fault-free and that when there is hostility directed at us from other parts of the world, it is always baffling and unjustified and crazy and malicious. And the accompanying cartoon-like belief is that anyone who has hostility towards the U.S. is some demented, crazed, Hitler-like monster.

"It really ought not be that difficult to understand that a country which rules the world by military force; invades, bombs and occupies other countries far more than anyone else; overthrows other countries' governments -- including their democratically elected ones -- and openly debates what other governments it should change; and issues endless lectures to the world about the evils of tyranny and nuclear weapons while constantly violating those sermons (and encouraging our allies to do so) with actions, is going to trigger rather intense and substantial hostility around the world, particularly in those regions where we are doing the invading, bombing, occupying and controlling. As George Washington explained quite clearly a couple hundred years ago, that is precisely why it is so ill-advised to engage in that behavior."

"The idea that we are the source of all Good in the world and that all anti-American anger is irrational is just the opposite side of the same Manichean coin that holds that the U.S. is the principal source of evil in the world. But while the latter form of irrational moralism is relegated to the fringes (at least in American politics), the former predominates in virtually all political discussions. On an individual level, most people have little difficulty understanding that a refusal to recognize one's own faults is one of the most self-destructive attributes a person can possess. But when it comes to the U.S. collectively, recognizing America's faults -- the actions we take to trigger anti-American animus -- is virtually prohibited."

Who Is This Guy, Really?

This author, an Iranian ex-pat tells us that MAD is completely sane and well "hinged." We will be sorry if we underestimate him or minimize him based on his fringe religious viewpoints. His fringe religious viewpoints are what motivate him and he won't be converted to our way of thinking.

"Ahmadinejad is a true devoted Muslim. Being unpredictable, self-contradictory and inconsistent are major symptoms of the mentally unhinged. By these standards of insanity, Ahmadinejad emerges as completely sane. He is fully predictable, consistent and has shown no self-contradiction. He does not even pretend that he misspoke or apologize for his outrageous statements. He is not a typical politician who practices the devious art of doublespeak, deception and change of position to suit his immediate convenience."

Enlightening article here.

Trouble Brewing In the Academy

If not trouble, then big changes. Technology is changing everything and some academics are beginning to resent it. Tenure will mean less if "contract" instructors take away full-time professors' prerogatives and upset their habits.

Interesting discussion regarding "student-centered" teaching and viewing students as "customers."

Politicians Appear to Be Working Very Hard

How To Achieve Blog Nirvana

Since I'm not blogging lately, I might as well make fun of it.

"Once you write enough blog posts, and read far too many blog posts, you acquire an instinctive sense for the principle ingredients of an audience-pleasing offering. However, rather than itemize those ingredients, it's far easier to discuss this magical formula in terms of the instinctive emotional responses you hope to conjure in readers. The broadest of those responses are indignation, titillation, stimulation, and affirmation. Hitting any of the buttons is good. Ideally, you pack as many of those responses as possible into your content, even (and sometimes especially) if they're contradictory. Hitting the sweet spot in the center of all four virtually guarantees bloggy nirvana. In honor of indefatigable Silicon Valley guru Tony Robbins, after the jump, you may explore these four spheres and their subspecies by way of a soothingly hued Venn diagram." Source.

Mark Knopfler - Punish The Monkey

From his BRAND NEW (today!) album Kill To Get Crimson.

There is a business / employee relations slant to this tune if you have ears to hear. Good song on top of that. He has that way to him, Mark Knopfler.

"A street entertainer, once common but now rare, was known as a Hurdy Gurdy man or Organ Grinder. He used to travel around with a hand-operated organ, or hurdy gurdy, playing tunes for anybody who would listen, and hope that his grateful audience would drop a coin or two into his tin cup. As entertainment he would usually have a pet monkey, often dressed in a cute little costume, who would dance for the audience and sometimes perform simple tricks, like doffing his cute little cap, or "playing dead for the Queen".

"The organ grinder was the man in charge. He turned the handle to grind out a tune, and all the monkey had to do was dance to that tune. The monkey could not make a move without the consent of his master.

"This relationship between man and monkey led an irate customer, when confronted by a lowly underling when he wanted to speak directly to the man in change, to utter that immortal phrase: "I want to speak to the organ grinder, not his monkey". " (Source)

of Peggy Noonan's 9.14.2007 article:

"An unspoken part of the larger story is that Gen. Petraeus backed up the argument that our troops have been stretched painfully thin, and the postsurge presence cannot, practically, be maintained. Thus a seeming illogic in the general's presentation: For the first time in years we're making progress, therefore we should reduce troop levels to the same point at which we made no progress."

Game On?

For a few years I've been driving by two gas stations on opposite corners accross the street from each other. One is a BP station, the other a Conoco/Union 76. Their gas prices have never ever been different from each other. They go up and down in sync. The little capitalist/mba in me thinks "chicken shits" 85 percent of the times I drive by them. And I drive by them a lot. It's like a mini-mart gasoline micro-cartel on those corners.

Well, the Conoco/Union 76 station recently changed over to a Shell Oil Franchise almost in the blink of an eye. Tonight the price of regular at BP was $2.54.9. Shell had their regular gas at $2.52.9. It will be interesting to see who blinks first. But it warmed my heart to see a little competition for a change.
UPDATE: Game off. Both stations were at $2.54.9 this morning 9.15.2007

Leonard Cohen - Anthem

(LEONARD COHEN BY JONI MITCHELL)

Commander Cohen is not only a beloved singer and songwriter to us, he is a poet. From his "The Future" album (1992).

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Thanks Clemencia for introducing me to him when the time was perfect.

8
For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

New York Times and "Betray Us" Ad

If this is true, how will the NYT explain this away?

Here, let me help them and propose:

"No comment. Our advertising pricing is a private matter between the New York Times and its advertising clients."

Maybe some flunky in the ad department will get tossed as a result, it being an "unauthorized decision" with a client. That may be more likely.

I have great cognitive dissonance over this. Of course the NYT has great journalism. Of course it has a liberal bent. But this kind of stuff makes me feel that the paper is unworthy to wipe my ass with.

The sooner this goes away of course, the happier the Gray Lady will be.

I don't get bent out of shape like the right wing by anything Moveon.org says. I don't have to read about or follow anything they say or do.

This is a free country still. Free press. All that good stuff.

This Petraus "controversy" is just another thing to distract us and allows the politicians to make hay on silly points rather than deal with any real issues.

"They're" all in on this to distract us me thinks.
UPDATE: Instapundit pointed me to an article that says the NYT has "special advocacy, stand by" rates for groups such as moveon.org, but they discount ads selectively "naturally." Article here.

Taking Care Of (At) Business

"Wal-Mart is famous for the stingy pay and benefits it offers its employees. But another giant chain store, Costco, takes a different approach. Full-time workers there average $15.97 per hour, which is almost 40% higher than their Wal-Mart counterparts, who earn $11.52. After four years, a Costco cashier’s yearly salary can rise to $44,000. The company also covers 92% of most of its workers’ health care costs. While the industry-wide turnover rate averages 66 percent, Costco’s is just 23 percent.

"Costco is so unusual in its benevolence that some business gurus disapprove. “From the perspective of investors, Costco’s benefits are overly generous,” says retail analyst Bill Dreher, quoted in the Wall Street Journal. He thinks the company’s largesse depresses its stock value because investors are afraid its profit margins aren’t as high as they could be.

"But the fact is that Costco is very successful. It’s five year growth rate has been 10.1 percent annually, better than Wal-Mart’s 9.8 percent. Its annual earnings were expected to rise from $41.7 billion in 2003 to $47.2 billion in 2004."

From: Pronoia Is The Antidote For Paranoia by Ron Brezsny (2005)

The chart above indicates the last 5 year stock performance between Wally World and Costco. Double click on it to see it better.

John Lennon's Jukebox

The songs, artists, and background that influenced the late great John Lennon of the Beatles. Records were found in Lennon's "portable" juke-box. Cool machine.

Irish Twins

What are Irish Twins? It’s the term given to babies in the same family that are less than 1 year apart in age.

That's not my sis and me in the picture, but we were probably pretty much like that. My mom had a little 3 mo. old baby girl when I "showed up." She used to say that she would be a rich woman if she got a nickle for every time dad said it was "safe." Joy, joy, the joy of motherhood in 1956/57! (In addition to us, she had a 5 year old and a 3 year old at the time too!
She and I are the same age for 9 days. We're in that period right now until September 20.

Love ya PAF /CM! Always.
