The Doobie Brothers - Ukiah

From my California Collection.

From 1973's The Captain and Me.

MP3 File

People rushin everywhere
If they'd only slow down once
They might find something there
Green trees and timber land
People workin with their hands
For sure a different way to live
Gonna keep my cabin at hand
Retreat and live off the land
All around Ukiah, wo

The mountain streams that rush on by
Show the fish a jumpin
And reflect the open sky
The fresh clean smell of the pines
Symbol of unchanging times
All around this sacred land

Strangely, though,
I've found my way
Right here
I'm gonna stay
In this land Ukiah, wo

Ukiah is without question one of the best songs the Doobie Brothers ever did. Full of beauty and passion. Truly a great song of that entire era, by anybody. Captures the back-to-the-land phenomenon, pristine blue sky and mighty pines, glistening water and jumping fish. Total clarity in its vision and embrace of life on the land, on Earth. I just purchased The Captain and Me the other day in order to relive some high school memories. I'd forgotten about Ukiah and wondered if anyone on the internet shared my love for the song. Guess I'm not the only one out there!

Just to be persnickety, there ain't many native pines around Ukiah (a few knobcones and grays, here and there), with the taller ponderosa pines a bit north towards Willits and beyond. But then, Tom Johnston isn't expected to be a botanist as well as a songwriter.

Dang good song!

I agree with Tartigrade. You have to go to Cow Mtn. to really get to the Pines. I should know I graduated 1964 Ukiah, Ca. Anyway you look at it, It is a great song. After all these years, on Nov 14, 2010 I will see the Doobies in Charleston, Sc. for my birthday.
