I wrote this back in April of 2001 for some reason. I found it in some documents from a class I was teaching at the University of New Orleans called "Strategic HR." I don't think I'd take any away and would add some. But I'm under a deadline. I wouldn't be so HR-Cocky either, but I think they stand up pretty well, even today. I've ammended in green where appropriate.
A Love Letter from an HR Guy to General Manager Types
2. Find a good one and use us.
3. Let common sense guide you and expect common sense from your HR support.
4. Respect HR’s time.
· “I don’t have time” (But we have time to track stuff down from you?)
· No call / no show for training classes. Training is our operations.
5. Read “Management for Dummies.”
6. Subscribe to a Management/Leadership-type newsletter.
7. Don’t get sucked in by Fads and don’t accept fads from your HR support either.
8. Use the Web, and read top blogs like: Bob Sutton, Cultural Offering, Execupundit, Fortify Your Oasis, John Phillips, Managing Leadership, Slow Leadership, Nicholas Bate...
9. Keep Learning (Sharpen the Saw) – Keep your mind open and be creative.
10. Make it a partnership.
11. Be an original.
12. You’ll never go wrong reading Tom Peters, Stephen Covey, Warren Bennis, Peter Drucker etc.
13. Do not accept living and dying by the numbers. You cannot measure “spirit.” It blows where it will.
14. The most important two things I learned in MY MBA.
· “Modesty Before Arrogance”
· Success is in direct proportion with how one handles failure.

Hi there,
Thanks for sharing this. Admittedly, I've never been a big fan of so many HR types - even to the point of disdain. However, your list here is quite sensible and practical, not just for the GM guy but also for the HR guy's peers.
As one HR manager whom I respect put it, "HR is everyone's business". It is. People = Task for the HR person, but People = "our job" for the managers of the world, of which there are armies of. Your points 2, 10, 12, 13 are good reminders for all of us to do 9. As I blogged once I don't manage IT,I manage people. It's true other than managing business needs, I manage people. So I better understand what tools and techniques there are to make me a better "HR" person.
Cheers,
Thanks so much Lui Sieh. Well said. Glad you visit here. I appreciate it. E.
