THE TURTLES - Outside Chance (1966)
The Turtles never sounded snottier than this punkish folk-rocker with a tough chiming 12-string riff (sorta based on The Beatles’ “Taxman”), bittersweet harmonies and an unexpected electric piano break. Written by Warren Zevon when he was labelmates with the Turtles in the duo Lyme & Cybelle (he was Lyme). This single failed to chart and soon afterwards the Turtles re-established themselves as pop mega-hitmakers with stuff like “Happy Together” and “Elenore”.
Artist: The Turtles
Title: Outside Chance
